Diabelli - Variation 5

Diabelli score Var 5

The motion of each variation has been increasing steadily. Here the turn from the theme’s upbeat is replaced by a pair of repeated notes, but the turn makes a subtle reappearance (in augmented form) in the right hand in bars 4 and 5 while the left hand plays a version of the rosalia’s 3 note sequence. The harmony of the actual rosalia phrase is altered to end the first half ambiguously on E. Ambiguously because we don’t know until the beginning of the 2nd half that we’re actually in e minor. The Db diminished 7th shows up here again as in variation 3.

It has occurred to me that the repeated notes that start this variation are a continuation of the two forte chords at the end of the previous variation – an example of how Beethoven is able to connect succeeding variations and imbue them with a sense of continuity.
